Vodafone and TOTAL activate first 5G service stations in Europe

Düsseldorf/Erfurt, February 10, 2020

Vodafone and TOTAL are jointly laying the foundation for the digital service station of the future. The operator of around 1,200 service stations in Germany and Vodafone have launched an exclusive 5G partnership. The first two 5G service stations in Europe are going online today in Düsseldorf and Erfurt. TOTAL customers can now benefit from fast Internet speeds and more digital services.

Mobile payment via e-wallet, digital signage and fast WLAN for customers: Service stations are becoming increasingly digital. Conventional DSL lines are more and more reaching their limits. Therefore, Vodafone and TOTAL Deutschland are introducing the new 5G mobile phone technology at service stations for the first time. Today, the partners lauchend 5G at the TOTAL station in Düsseldorf/Forststraße. At the same time, the TOTAL station in Erfurt/Arnstaedter Straße is also being converted to 5G. All digital services as well as POS terminals transmit data reliably in the 5G network with bandwidths of up to 500 megabits per second - and thus about ten times faster than with a conventional DSL connection.

"We finished the year 2019 with the first 5G innovations and we will continue in 2020. Those who rely on future-oriented technologies today will be one step ahead of its markets players tomorrow," says Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO of Vodafone Deutschland. "5G not only leads to competitive advantages in huge industrial halls. The new mobile phone technology is also needed in places where we do not immediately suspect it - even while refueling".

In order to connect the first two 5G service stations to the network, Vodafone and TOTAL have activated the 'Gigacube 5G' version of the 5G router specially developed for business customers at the two locations in Düsseldorf and Erfurt. The ‘Gigacube 5G’ receives the 5G signal, which is provided locally via the Vodafone mobile network. The 5G router is separately encrypted and connected to the 5G network. All data is thus specially secured. The 5G router transmits the signal to an intelligent network distributor. This divides the available network capacity into small sub-networks and makes it available for the individual digital services. In this way, service station operators can prioritize individual services and provide the required bandwidth.

"The possibility of reserving bandwidths for special customer groups or services opens up whole new areas of application for our business customers," explains Thomas Strauß. "At the two pilot locations, we can now test innovative services in a targeted manner. We are very pleased to be at the forefront of 5G right from the start".
