Sustainability "to go": TotalEnergies launches RECUP deposit system

Berlin/Munich 10.01.2022

From now on, TotalEnergies customers can choose a RECUP deposit cup instead of a disposable cup when buying a drink to go at over 600 TotalEnergies service-stations. TotalEnergies' cooperation with RECUP, Germany's largest reusable provider, began back in December 2021 at 50 TotalEnergies stations. Now, in January, more than 600 stations have started with the alternative to the disposable cup.

TotalEnergies puts sustainable development in all its dimensions at the heart of its projects and activities to contribute to people's well-being. "This also includes reducing the large number of disposable cups in Germany and playing an active part in increasing sustainability and protecting the environment," explains Thomas Strauß, director Network at TotalEnergies in Germany. "To achieve this, we entered into cooperation with RECUP because, in addition to the uncomplicated processing for our partners at the filling stations, we were also convinced by the spread of the RECUP system in Germany."

With the connection of TotalEnergies to the deposit system, around 3,300 of the 11,000 RECUP/REBOWL dispensing points across Germany are service stations. "Together we can make a big difference, because the demand for drinks and coffee-to-go is very high at service stations," says Fabian Eckert, founder and CEO of RECUP. "Working with large energy companies has shown us that RECUP, together with service stations, can save many millions of disposable cups across Germany. We are very pleased to have TotalEnergies as an important partner for our deposit system at our side," Eckert continues.

How does the system work for customers?

Since 1 January 2022, TotalEnergies customers have been able to take drinks to go in sustainable RECUP deposit cups for a deposit of 1 euro, enjoy them on the go and then return the cups to more than 600 TotalEnergies stations and almost 11,000 dispensing points throughout Germany. When returning the cup, customers get their deposit back.

How does the system work for the partners?

The process is very convenient for TotalEnergies partners: the RECUPs are ordered via a separate online portal. If returned reusable cups pile up at their service station, operators can send them back to RECUP and get the corresponding amount of money refunded for the deposit paid out. With RECUP, TotalEnergies is anticipating the reusable cup obligation that will come into force in 2023. The new law obliges catering businesses to offer their customers environmentally friendly reusable alternatives to disposable cups in out-of-home sales.

Founded in September 2016 by Fabian Eckert and Florian Pachaly, reCup GmbH offers a simple, attractive and sustainable alternative to single-use packaging with its Germany-wide reusable deposit system RECUP and REBOWL. The circular deposit system is based on 100% recyclable reusable containers: RECUP on to-go cups and REBOWL on take-away bowls. At more than 10,000 distribution and return points throughout Germany, in the form of cafés, restaurants, bakeries, kiosks, company catering outlets and petrol stations, the reusable cups and reusable bowls can be borrowed and returned for a deposit. Test phases are also already underway with various providers in the food delivery sector. The goal of the company, which has been awarded the "Blue Angel" seal by the German government, among others, is to make disposable packaging superfluous, to further raise social awareness on the topic of packaging waste and to encourage people to rethink their general consumption behaviour.
